黒魔術を使って機械文明を破壊し、人類社会を原始時代に逆行させようとする狂信的アナーキスト（ユナボマーみたいだな）のランス・マンダリン博士と、億万長者のアマチュア犯罪学者ジェイムズ・ホームとの戦いを描いたオカルト・アクション小説。初出は Dr. Death 誌1935年3月号。同誌は怪人の名前を誌名にした最初のヒーロー・パルプ（３号でつぶれた）。デニス・ホイートリ『黒魔団』と同年の刊行であることが興味深い。なおゾロはペンネームで、その正体は、ホラー＆探偵パルプ系作家のハロルド・ウォード（ワード）といわれる。
